January 2009

The giddy anticipation of soon-to-be President Barack Obama being sworn into office is undeniable. What will he say during his inaugural address? Who will be there to celebrate the historic occasion? And what will future First Lady Michelle Obama wear? These seem to be the big buzz questions. In light of these stressful and uncertain times, some may condemn the American public for its passionate curiosity about what dress Michelle wears as light minded and superficial. But, maybe these tough times are the reasons we do care. Taking note and actually seizing pleasure in this fashion discussion is not only an escape from more serious life matters, but it also is an opportunity to observe and experience a visual representation that embodies the message of change, hope and confidence. And we thought we had a hard time finding something to wear!!!

So, on that note, here is an opportunity to create the ideal formal dress for soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama so she will authentically stand out at the Inaugural Ball. Since President-elect Barack Obama wanted to have his Inaugural events be all inclusive including the Ball, it is sure to be the lollapalooza of Inaugurations to date! A glamfest which includes celebrities, Washington insiders, and everyday average American guests engaging with one another. Beyonce Knowles is scheduled to sing the Etta James classic “At Last” for the infamous first dance and all eyes will be on the President and Mrs. Obama.

Although it is to be expected that soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama has already selected her custom designed dress for the Inaugural Ball, Moore On Style thought it might be fun for readers to participate in the creative design process and perhaps her dress may even incorporate some of your ideas. You may also have gotten a better understanding at the pleasurable yet challenging process of selecting a formal gown, especially when all eyes are on you. In any case, January 20th 2009 stands to be a monumental and historic event for the United States of America, its citizens and the Obama’s. We will not have to speculate much longer and whatever Michelle chooses to wear she will undoubtedly exude confidence.

Come on fashionistas, express yourselves! What did you decide would be the best options for Michelle Obama to wear to the upcoming Inaugural Ball? A few designers have started reading Corporate Fashionista posts and we would like to give them your honest feedback about what you find compelling (or not so hot, depending?) about current styles, where and how you wear them, and how you feel in them.

New Year, New You?

January 13, 2009

The beginning of a New Year usually coincides with preparing our annual list of resolutions. We immediately begin feeling excitement yet all too fast end up feeling defeated! What happened? We just felt motivated and now we feel deflated and even pessimistic. While the fundamentals of goal setting are extremely advantageous and beneficial, the majority of us get caught up in the ‘I shoulds’ or ‘I have to’s’ rather than in the ‘I want to’s’. This is the “no fun” approach that can lead to unnecessary stress and possible setbacks because the list was not truly and authentically inspiring in the first place. Perhaps a more fulfilling approach to accomplishing New Year resolutions is to create a list entirely of ‘I want to’s’ focused on the ways in which we can eliminate the barriers in our lives that have kept us from reaching our goals all along. The idea is once those barriers are lifted, there’s no stopping us!

In terms of personal style, perhaps a goal could be that you would like to make getting dressed be less of an effort each morning so that you could start your day off better. Or maybe you would like to learn more effective ways to pack your suitcase for business trips so that you felt more carefree and self assured when you arrived. Being more financially responsible when it comes to your wardrobe may be a goal this year or perhaps you need to actually invest more time and money into presenting your best self. You may even find that taking better care of the clothes that you already own would benefit you this year.

Fashion and developing personal style is simply another tool in life that can help to liberate women and men from what holds them back. Think of the year 2009 as a prep-year for your future. What is it that you have been putting off that would make you feel good about yourself? Don’t we all have the right to feel good about ourselves? If your answer is ‘yes!’, skip the part about why you’ve been putting it off and just do it! Here are some ideas to start your fashion bucket list now:

Regardless of their form, resolutions shed an important light on where we are versus where we want to be. It absolutely does not mean that you are not already good enough. It is simply an opportunity to stop putting off your goals and to make room for the things in your life that you really want and deserve. Determine and break-down the necessary steps to accomplish your resolutions. Interestingly enough, fashion and personal style can give you the attitude and the panache to achieve your life goals. Make sure your New Years resolutions include more (if not all) ‘I want to’s’ rather than ‘ I shoulds’ or ‘I have to’s’.

What’s on your fashion bucket list this year?
