Are you ready to have some fun? The Fourth of July celebratory weekend is just around the corner! It’s a wonderful opportunity to take a break from the office and enjoy time with friends and family.

Of course, we want to be fashionably prepared for the long weekend too. I am usually not a fan of cliché holiday dressing because it often appears too contrived, “matchy-matchy” and cutesy for my taste.

Festive accessories are a winning way to override these style traps and still have our holiday attire fun to wear for the occasion.

Vanport Outfitters – Frederick Grubmeyer Tote – Le Train Bleu
Vanport Outfitters – Laurent Suavé Beach Sling Bag – Le Train Bleu (L-R)

I couldn’t wait to share with you these delightful well-crafted red, white and blue canvas robe bags designed by a company based in Oregon, VanPort Outfitters. The Frederick Grubmeyer Tote and the Laurent Suavé Beach Sling Bag have the perfect look for this holiday, but, more importantly, each bag will truly support us in so many ways over the weekend.

We will be able to easily stash all of our necessities and take it straight from the community parade to the beach to the neighborhood barbeque and end with our head resting on it while lying on the grass looking up at the fireworks. Ah, time to finally relax!

Even better is that there is no reason we could not continue to use them throughout the summer. Terrific versatile and festive bags!

Jessica Ogden X F-Troupe – Indigo Crisscross Wedge – La Garçonne
Jessica Ogden X F-Troupe – Red Crisscross Wedge – La Garçonne

The next accessory I was undeniably looking forward to sharing with you are these fantastic wedge F-Troupe sandals.

Indigo blue striped criss-cross canvas straps are just right for the occasion. They come in red too!

An attractive comfort feature to the Jessica Ogden X style is that the platform section of the shoe is almost level with the wedge heel, so it is almost like we will be walking in flats. Plus, the suede insole will reduce foot slippage in the heat. This will allow us an unbeatable combo…to look great while remaining confidently active throughout each day.

We are all set to confidently attend each event wearing our own holiday inspired S-P-A-R-K-L-E-R-S!

Keep It Cool When It’s Hot

  3. Diane von Furstenberg – Afari Top – Matches
  4. Elie Tahari – Theora Pants – Zappos

  7. Citrine by the Stones – Wire Nugget Bangles – Max&Chloe
  8. Lucky Brand – Wicker Bangles – Lucky Brand
  9. Tod’s – Sand Suede Lace-Up D’orsay Flat Shoes – Bluefly

It’s HOT! And the last thing we want to think about is what to wear to work. We want comfort without sacrificing style to the heat. Dresses! Skirts! Sure those will do. But, what if those options just don’t fit well into our day’s activities? Here is the rundown on one of many ways to put together a great work outfit well suited for these warm summer days:

Try a pair of lightweight dress pants. A few fabric choices are cotton blends, linen blends and tropical wool. Did I just suggest that you wear wool in the summer heat? Yes, I did! Tropical wool (sometimes called ‘summer weight wool’) has a more porous weave allowing our body heat to escape and fresh air to enter. So, don’t be afraid! It is also beneficial to select a pair of pants in a light colored fabric too. This combo should keep you comfy throughout the day. Here’s a great pair by Elie Tahari [4].

Pair the Elie Tahari pants with this thin and loose fitting silk Diane von Furstenberg [3] top. It will keep you cool no matter the day’s events. Not only does the print have a summery vibe, but it will also hide any perspiration marks. I have noticed many of these flouncy styled tops in stores right now are too full, too long and/or too sheer. A simple solution is to add a belt or cami with the top to create a flattering feminine fit. This medium-width brown leather braided belt by Ralph Lauren [5] is perfect for summer!

A gorgeous timeless quality handbag that can be utilized all year round is a worthwhile investment! J’adore this one designed by Sergio Rossi [1]! The supple python-embossed leather is stunning. The taupe color palette makes it such a versatile handbag too. Plus, the size allows us to carry all of our *stuff*. I’m sold!

Normally, I would have selected either a dark brown handbag or a dark brown pair of shoes with the showcased outfit. However, these Tod’s flats [9] were too good to pass up. First, Tod’s makes a quality shoe. Second, flats are ideal on a hot summer day. Third, the flexible rubber soles create more cushion for our swollen feet. Although these shoes are made with suede material, the peep toe style feature will continue to keep our feet cool and yet still be appropriate for the office. And finally, the sand color allows us to add another versatile piece to our wardrobes.

Of course, I wanted to incorporate some additional colors to the otherwise neutral color palette in this hot summer work outfit. An easy way to make this happen is to have fun with jewelry. For this particular outfit, I chose to keep the earrings in a complimentary gold tone and then add color by mixing various bracelets. These Melanie Auld Designs [2] earrings were perfect! Next, I loved the gold tone set of wire bangle bracelets by Citrine by the Stones [7] and decided to mix them with the Ettika [6] turquoise and sandalwood bracelet plus the charming Lucky Brand [8] green wicker bangle. Our summer work outfit is now complete!

So you see, it is possible to stay cool and still look fashionable at the office!

Tony Hsieh – CEO, Zappos – Inc. Magazine

As many of you already know, online mega shoe and apparel store, Zappos, was purchased by Amazon a few months back. It was a surprise to so many of us. Why did they sell when they appeared to be such a success?

Well, the reason surprised me. Fundamentally, it was not about Zappos fiscally overextending themselves or fearing any competition. In a recent interview with Inc. magazine, Zappos’ CEO Tony Hsieh clears up any misconceptions and shares the real reason he finally decided to sell.

Tony states that Zappos’ board of directors was primarily interested in maximizing profits and investing less on employee and corporate culture. And that didn’t sit well with him. Tony firmly believes that genuinely happy employees will lead to happy customers and, ultimately, sustainable high profits. The company’s historical track record had proven Tony’s happiness quotient worked well and Tony did not want to change it. A more thorough explanation can be found in the Inc. article.

After a few attempts to get Tony to sell, Jeff Bezos over at Amazon finally got a “Yes” from Tony and says he fully supports the young, savvy CEO’s successful business ethos.

Zappos will remain a separate entity within Amazon and Tony will continue to be at the helm. Here is a fun and insightful behind-the-scenes interview at Zappos headquarters by CBS Sunday Morning show that ran the other day. It highlights the methods behind the madness that is Zappos corporate culture.

Tony Hsieh just released his new book this week, “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose” which undoubtedly you can find at Amazon.

Do you notice the “happiness quotient” when you shop or interact with customer service employees? I would really like to know the specific ways customer service affects the way you do your shopping?
