Is There More To Fashion Than Meets The Eye

I’m a huge fan of celebrity fashion stylist, Rachel Zoe, and the red carpet work she does with actresses Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Garner, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Kate Hudson and many more. She’s gifted at helping these leading ladies mesmerize audiences. So I was intrigued when I saw this quote from her go viral, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

At first glance, it makes sense.

But I think the sentiment is only halfway there and I’d like to take it all the way…

As women, we want our voices to be heard. If you look good, you feel entitled to speak.

You want to use fashion to empower you to speak, not just let the clothes speak for you.

Yes, it’s true you want to visually captivate and reinforce your professional goals through your attire, but you also want your attire to give you confidence!

Style gives you the courage to speak out and be heard – à la gutsy girl!

Do you have a work wardrobe that empowers you? If so, what are your go-to pieces? If not, what’s holding you back…money, time, style knowledge, etcetera?

I love both quotes. It’s definitely true, when I’m put together (for me simple makeup and great hair are at least as vital as the clothes I wear) it definitely brings out my confidence. I feel more comfortable looking people in the eye, smiling, engaging. I blossom into myself. Because I’m not technically “corporate” I have a lot of leeway in my attire, and I – way too often – opt for my cutoffs, flip-flops and a tee. I love that I have this option, but I have a great wardrobe and should as you say Kristina “make it earn it’s stay in my closet.” The truth is when I do dress it is often only my dog and family that see! But, I guess even there I’m more confident too. Now that I think of it, when I’m “dressed” and say “sit” it does seem more effective;) Thanks for this post…timely of course, as I’ve been wanting to let my stylish self shine lately. All my best to you…Thais

Being in my mid-20s I feel a professional wardrobe sends the message to business partners, clients and collegues that i take my work seriously. My wardrobe go to’s are a freshly pressed pair of slacks with a blouse or a knee length black and white dress with a pair of comfortable wedges. So while i agree, my wardrobe sends a message, to really be taken seriously, is something i have to earn.
    Thank you!
